IT strategy is vital to business success. It defines the future goals and charts your path to achieve them.
You will start day two by looking at the most common business strategy frameworks and discuss how they can be adapted to meets the needs of IT. The stages of a world-class IT strategy process are described, illustrated with case studies from major international organizations.
The main session on day 2 works through a leading process for developing IT strategy, starting with business alignment. We identify the key inputs required from business strategy to deliver a successful IT strategic plan – and how to address situations where this information is not available. This session is led by David McKean, a former CIO and author of publications on both business and IT strategy.
The method has been developed by IT Leaders over several years, and is unique and industry leading. We use a workbook approach to highlight the different stages of strategy development, making it easier to understand. Business targets are then related to IT targets. A process is developed for segmenting IT activities, allowing projects and actions to be focused on delivering high performance IT outcomes with a direct correlation to business results.
One of the key emphases of our strategy work is to move away from what we call “the first idea we thought of” school of strategy. To achieve this, we look at developing an initial strategy and then refine it looking at the impact of different scenarios and risks. This provides a more effective and robust end result.
Day 2 ends with a presentation of a number of output formats for IT strategy, including important techniques for communicating strategy and in particular, presenting high level strategy.
